Monday night winners
in July include Fred Avery, Paula Hague, Jean Mariott, Millard Simmons, Bill Peters, Dave and Eric Newcomer.199er Game
: We have changed the masterpoint limit for the Monday night game to 200! Some of our regular players had gone over 100 and a couple more were very close, so we made it possible for them to continue to play with us. Please spread the word among the rising players you see in Macon and anywhere¡¦ We award a loyalty prize each month: from those who play most often, we randomly select one to win a FREE PLAY. In July, there were 6 players who played all 4 Mondays.Accomplishments:
Elsie Benn, Edith Hardy and George Walker have all made Life Master.Host/Hostess for A
ugust: Janet and Lana on Tuesdays and Thursdays with Fred and Marie on Wednesdays.¡¡ But remember: we should all be responsible for cleaning up our own messes! Marie Douglas is not your mother, nor is she paid to be your maid! But she is always on kp duty, regardless of who is Host/hostess for the month. Since North has a lot of paperwork to do, let¡¯s have South take responsibility for leaving the area neat and clean at the end of the game. And you may show off your culinary prowess any time you want.REMEMBER TO TURN YOUR CELL PHONE OFF OR TO VIBRATE during the game. Please.
REMINDER:¡¡ Put empty soda cans in the recycling container.¡¡ Be sure to remove tab and place in the plastic bag on side of container.¡¡ These tabs are important as they are helping the Ronald McDonald House. If you have recently become an emailer, please give me your
email address.¡¡ I send the monthly newsletter and calendar of special games via email.¡¡ This saves having to print a lot of copies.¡¡ Also, if you change your email address, let me know about it.Thank you,
Editorial
Just experienced another of the reasons Bridge is such a wonderful pastime. Some of you who are (or were) excellent golfers or tennis players may at some time have had an opportunity to spend a lot of money to play with or against famous players. In bridge you only have to go to any tournament to have such an opportunity. Being host in July, I came to the club one night without a partner. Frank Asbury, one of those names you often see in top masterpoint lists, also came, so Ruth asked him if he wanted to play with me. He was too nice to say no. Well, I did several things that embarrassed me, but also did some good things, so we came in for 1.5 masterpoints. And the price was only the usual $4! A certain pair reached a grand slam against us, missing 3 aces! After the hand, Frank said "I had intended to kibitz these guys and maybe give them some tips on slam bidding." "Well," says I, "we just did that."Sounds right to me¡¦ Jerry
People to remember:
Marilou Dixon is improving, but not back to bridge as yet. Connie Jackson has returned. Dottie McClung is still in Atlanta area continuing rehabilitation therapy on her knee.¡¡ Her new address is Brighton Gardens, 2401 Cumberland Parkway SE, Atlanta GA 30339.¡¡ It is also posted on the bulletin board.¡¡ A card to her would certainly be appreciated.¡¡ Hope she will soon be back home and playing bridge with us. Connie and Gerald Jackson are both recuperating: he from a knee replacement, her from complications following heart surgery.Bev Aldridge
is still living at Summer's Landing and is not getting out very often.¡¡ Her address is Summer's Landing, 602 Kimberly Drive, Apt #6, Warner Robins, GA 31088. A card to her would be greatly appreciated.¡¡ Her phone number is 923-5180. Larry Turner died and was buried in Thomaston Friday, July 31. Keep Mildred and the family in your prayers.A new pair aptly named
Newcomer has started playing with us on Mondays: Dave and Eric are taking lots of masterpoints back to Macon with them. Please note that we have a lot of
Bridge Books on hand for you to borrow.¡¡ We have room for more, so if you have multiple copies of a book or books you feel you have outgrown, bring in the extras. Also, we recently added another book case and are filling it with hard cover and paperback books for you to swap or borrow.¡¡ Bring your books that you have finished reading.Advertise
your club. We are planning to offer FREE lessons this Fall, on both Sunday afternoons and Monday nights (beginning September 13 and 14). This is probably the very best way to get new club members and new friends. Spread the word and emphasize that the lessons are not directed only to those who already play bridge nor only to Duplicate players. Sessions will run about 2 ¨ö hours. Mondays we will probably teach Easybridge and Sundays three courses on "Bidding" "Play" and "Defense".Your
Board of Directors will next meet on the third Wednesday in September (the 16th) at 11:00 am. If you have concerns, ideas, or a wish to help in any way, talk to any of the Board members before that time.North American Pairs:
This is a true grassroots event that culminates at a North American Bridge Championship!! Each club is entitled to three qualifying games for each regularly scheduled game each month for June, July and August. You may qualify in flight A (more than 2,000 mp), B (500 to 2,000 mp) or C (under 500 mp). Qualifiers not only win higher masterpoint awards than in regular games (half red points), but may play in their District Finals. Top winners in each District win subsidized trips to the next scheduled NABC! Our club is in very good shape financially, so we don¡¯t charge extra for the special games, though we have to pay $4.00 per table extra to ACBL. These games are real bargains! Our District Finals are in Spartanburg SC on November 14th and 15th. The NABC winners will compete at is in Reno NV next March.Tournament of Special Interest:
Macon always puts on a very good tournament. (With some help from the Robins Duplicate Bridge Club). The next event is August 14-16. Let¡¯s give it our usual level of support including providing food, helping in any way needed and playing as many sessions as we can stand (make that "sit").Note also that there are tournaments in the near future in Athens and Valdosta and Regionals (Gold Points!) in Atlanta and Augusta. These are all less than 150 miles from here. Warner Robins is in a wonderful location.
Electronic Clock:
Thank Harpe and Ruth for taking the initiative to drag us into the 21st century with this marvel of efficiency, precision and bossiness. We Directors are happy to no longer have to shout when it is time for the next round. And players are not dependent on the time keeping abilities of the Director or lack thereof. Thanks to Jean Middleton for the monitor.Another New Member of ACBL:
Ellen Ginn, who has become a loyal Monday night player, just joined ACBL. I tell people that the magazine alone is well worth the price of membership. I retained my membership when I was not playing at all, for several years, and felt that I was getting a bargain. Tell people who are not members or have let their membership lapse that they need to join ACBL before the end of this year to get in on the current rules for attaining Life Master status. Requirements will increase beginning with those who join in 2010 and after.SILAS MARNER PLAYS A HAND OF BRIDGE
Will Put in Hand Later
You've bid 6 spades and the opening lead is a club. You have to decide immediately whether to finesse or not. Silas Marner (Dickens; remember from High School?) would reason that it is a shame to play two high cards on the same trick. Playing a low card from dummy guarantees 5 winners in the suit even if East has the king. That makes, let's see: 6 spades, 1 heart, 3 diamonds and 5 clubs = 15! A careful bridge player doesn't count that way. You see a probable club loser and a later heart loser, which you can pitch on the third diamond winner. Even with the club king, the opponents can not set your contract. You take 6 spades, 1 heart, 3 diamonds and 2 clubs = 12 tricks! Play the ace of clubs, pull trumps, give up a club to establish a winner. Now the ace of hearts and 3 diamonds are good. A heart on the opening lead would have made you a bit uneasy, but wouldn¡¯t have stopped you, even if one opponent held all 4 trumps. The other night at Robins Duplicate Bridge Club, it seems that 4 misers played this hand. Yes, 4 pairs went down at 6 spades, 4 made it and one wimped out at 4 spades. Yes, the opening lead was a singleton, and the return was trumped!
